GAME-CHANGER! Marie Crowe First Woman to Lead Soccer Writers Ireland

History has been made with the recent election of RTE Broadcaster Marie Crowe as President of Soccer Writers Ireland where she will lead the body for the next two years.

Crowe, who is presenter of RTE Radio 1's Inside Sport and currently fronting RTE's coverage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, becomes the 34th President and the first female journalist to hold the top position in the Association's 66 year history.

In accepting the honour, the versatile broadcaster and journalist paid tribute to outgoing President John Fallon and past officers of the Association.

"I’m delighted and honoured to take on this role and follow in the footsteps of so many remarkable colleagues," she commented.

"The Soccer Writers has been a welcoming and encouraging place, where I’ve always felt like I’ve belonged. I’m very proud to be the first female president and I hope many more will come after me.

It’s especially heartening to see the growth and development of women and girls football, the future is bright for all those involved in the game. It’s an exciting time. I’d like to thank outgoing President John Fallon for his guidance and dedication over the last few years."

At the AGM, Crowe's RTE colleague Adrian Eames was elected Vice President while Ray Scott of WLRfm was re-elected as Secretary.

Paul Fennessy (The 42) was also re-elected to the role of Treasurer while Noel Spillane remains as PRO for the coming year.

Others elected at the meeting were Paul O Hehir as Domestic Affairs Officer and Gavin Cummiskey remains as International Affairs Officer.
